If it’s a treasured book, or an elderly book (30 or 50 or 80 years old) then: bookmark.
If it’s a modern paperback (or a shitty hardback I’m reading out of spite) I’ll dogear it. I also write in the margins of my paperbacks and create my own written index on the back page of the coolest parts.
Note that some of my paperbacks date from the 1940s and I treat them like museum treasures.
But always, I try to remember the page number I last read, because bookmarks fall out and dogears get undogged.
sometimes the writing process is like “WHATEVER just slap it in there I’ll work it out later” and then I come back to whatever taped together monstrosity of a sentence I wrote months later and wonder what the fuck was I even talking about
